Talavera

UNESCO-Listed Craft

Since 2019, Talavera from Puebla and Tlaxcala sits on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list—honoring the hand-thrown, hand-painted majolica that bridges Spanish, Mexican, and Indigenous artistry.

500 Years old

Talavera arrived in Mexico in the 1530s, when potters from Talavera de la Reina, Spain, taught Puebla’s new colonial workshops how to make tin-glazed majolica. Five centuries later, the craft’s Old-World DNA is still visible in every swirl.

Weeks-to-Months in the Making

Between mixing, air-drying, two firings and meticulous hand-painting, a single plate can take several weeks and pass through dozens of skilled hands before it’s signed and sealed.

From clay to masterpiece

Step by step process

Clay prep

Step 1

Blend Puebla’s white & dark clays, thoroughly knead to expel air and achieve a uniform, workable body.

Form & Dry

Step 2

Wheel-throw or mold the plate, trim edges, then air-dry slowly until bone-dry.

Bisque Fire & Inspect

Step 3

First kiln run hardens the clay; pieces are “ring-tested” and rejected if cracked.

Glaze & Decorate

Step 4

Dip in the signature tin-lead white glaze, then hand-paint designs with mineral oxides.

Glost Fire & Finish

Step 5

Second firing vitrifies the glaze and oxidizes pigments to their vivid hues; bases are sanded, stamped, and the plate is ready for market.
